Development of a research question or hypothesis statement (100 points). This
paper (up to one page) will express the area or question or hypothesis statement
you wish to explore in the class. Base your question or hypothesis statement on an
area of interest to you that you believe is relevant to your coaching or
administrative duties. You must include any sources you have found to date. To
successfully complete the entire project, you will need at least five references,
though you do not need to include the five references for this assignment. Due

VII. (Assignment number 2) Development of a Research Proposal – First two
chapters – Introduction, Statement of the Problem, and Review of the Literature
(minimum three to five pages) (Chapters 4-5 of text)
You may include information from Assignment #1, with corrections that you
made based on the instructor’s feedback. The chapters will be titled:
Introduction, Statement of the Problem and Review of the Literature. After
reviewing information in chapters 4-5 of the text, begin the development of a
research proposal that:
a) Includes an introduction of a coaching/leadership style, how the chosen
style will support your research question or hypothesis statement, and the
importance to you professionally.
b) Effectively describes a problem in an area of sports, coaching or athletic
administration.
c) Clearly states a research question or hypothesis statement to be tested
using research methodology.
d) Reviews pertinent literature in the area of study. The review must contain
a minimum of five references from reputable sources, journals or books.
Elements of assignment number 1 may be used for the development of the
research proposal.
The cover page does not count in the total number of pages required. Due July 2,

VIII. (Assignment number 3) Creation of a Research Methodology (Chapters 6-10
in the text) (three to five pages, 10 total pages (minimum for the research proposal)
(Include your previous two chapters, with the corrections that you have made.)
Review the PowerPoint and ensuing video for a description of the key elements
that should be included. This section is crucial to creating a valid and reliable
research proposal. The student must develop a methodology that can effectively
answer the research question or test the hypothesis statement. The chapter must
include the previous, two chapters – assignment number 2 and the following
headings and subheadings:
Methodology main heading that includes an introduction prior to the
subheadings
a. Terms and Assumptions – include this subheading and relevant
information (at least one paragraph).
b. Population and Sample – include the population and sample that
you plan to use for your study (at least one paragraph).
c. Research Design – (at least one paragraph). Review chapter seven
in the textbook and include an appropriate research design for your
study.
d. Data – include this subheading and relevant information regarding
the data for your study (at least one paragraph).
e. Data Collection – include the data collection and relevant
information (at least one paragraph).
f. Instruments – include if you plan to use a questionnaire, survey,
Likert scale, etc. (at least one paragraph).
g. Reliability and Validity of the Instruments – include this

h. Reliability and Validity of the Methodology – include the
methodology that you plan to use for your study. For example,

(minimum of two additional pages in length – minimum of 10 total pages for the

a) This paper should constitute your research proposal with all five chapters
included. This paper is worth 200 points and must contain previously
suggested corrections.
b) Predict the outcome of the proposed study, based on review of the
research, expert opinion and personal experience.
c) Relate the results of your study to your review of the literature
d) Submit a properly formatted reference page with a minimum of five
professional/academic references.
e) Appropriately cite sources and quote authors in APA.
Students will be informed that their final research proposals will be automatically

The research project need not be actually executed; we understand you do not have
time during the semester to actually complete the study. It must be based, however,
on your understanding of research methods and reflect your ability to find
documents and access information. As with the previous assignments, the rubric for
grading will require clear, concise expression, proper formatting, and an understanding of
the research process.
Assignment Number 4, Due July 30, 2018/Safe Assign
This paper will be a summation of the previous three chapters along with the final two
chapters of the paper. You will write your anticipated findings, based on your research on
the topic and methodology. At this point in the paper, you may be creative in your
statements, as long as you have a sound research basis for your statements. Address the
significance of the study and its effects on the subjects. Remember, make the changes
suggested in previous sections, so I can review your progress towards making the paper
as correct as possible. It will open the possibility for full credit.
In the Professional Implications section, apply your anticipated results to your
professional interests and why the results should be considered important to other
coaches or administrators in the world of sport.
The total paper submitted should have five chapters, totaling a minimum of 10 pages, and
a minimum of one reference page containing at least five professional/academic
references.

People often associate research with the collection of data through questionnaires,
interviewing or other methods. For our purposes the research process consists of eight
elements:

2. Reviewing the literature
3. Development of theoretical and conceptual frameworks
4. Clarification of research question/hypothesis

1. Selection of Topic
This is a difficult stage and takes up a great deal of time. There may be a need to develop
a preliminary research question and set of objectives. Find a subject area that interests
you and about which you have develop some ideas. Ask yourself if the topic is interesting
and can contribute to a better understanding of your subject area.
2. Reviewing the literature
The literature review is generally done alongside the development of the theoretical and
conceptual frameworks. Reading widely will alert you to other, similar types of research,
provide descriptions of the theoretical frameworks and previous methodologies adopted
by others.
3. Development of the theoretical and conceptual frameworks
As you read the literature, you will continually develop and refine your theoretical and
conceptual frameworks. Your conceptual framework defines and organizes the concepts
important within the study. It gives you a base upon which to build your study.

The first three stages of the research process will initially become circular resulting in
choices being investigated and rejected for a number of reasons,
