↗ Directors use a combination of film technique, structure and storyline to manipulate the
audience in order to challenge their understanding of an issue within society and move
them beyond their comfort zone in order to present a new view of the reality we live in.
Martin Scorsese exemplifies this in the film Shutter Island, which follows the story of a
US Marshall who is looking for a missing patient that has escaped a psychiatric facility
for the criminally insane. He highlights America’s anxieties by exploring the power of
the mind. He exposes the audience to the effect that trauma can have on an individual,
providing a face and a past for the criminally insane through the uses of an unreliable
narrator. He builds the horror for the audience by stringing them along with a series of
creative techniques so that they fully understand the harsh truth of those who have
experienced atrocities many could only imagine.
