Social change project (3,000 words)
Think about an issue or area in which you would like to see change happening, or resisted, this could relate to policies and practices, ideas and beliefs, social behaviour, ethical norms etc.
The case study should relate to a topic or theme that you are interested in and wish to learn more about. It needs to be focused on a specific change you would like to see in the world,
The topic should relate to social change such as changes to policies, social structures, relationships or practices, or changes in social norms, ideas or beliefs. Whilst this might involve the use of new technology or scientific knowledge the case study should focus on the social change that the deployment of this might bring about,
It is suggested that you chose a topic that is relatively manageable i.e. with some specific geographical boundaries (i.e. changing attitudes to climate change in Australia or Victoria, or even LaTrobe University would be more manageable than changing global attitudes to climate change), and that it does not involve you having to spend a lot of time trying to master a completely new topic (i.e. inventing a cure for cancer)
Your essay should include: an analysis of the current situation, why it needs to change; the obstacles to, and potential drivers of, change; and a strategy for bringing change about.
If you want some inspiration have a look at these case studies on the Change Agency website http://www.thechangeagency.org/01_cms/details.asp?ID=70. This website has a lot of useful tools and tips for thinking particularly about campaigning.
Also, here is a suggested structure for project:
an analysis of the current situation (approx. 500 word)
why it needs to change (250 words)
the obstacles to, and potential drivers of, change (750 words)
and a strategy for bringing change about (1,500 words)
The suggested word quotas for each section are quite rubbery given that there is a bit of overlap between some sections. However, I hope it at least illustrates where the emphasises needs to be.Remember, the primary purpose of the exercise is for you to demonstrate your ability to understand and apply ideas, concepts, approaches from the lectures and required readings
