In a formal workplace setting there are certain standards that are expected to be met. It is only common for these facilities to be top notch in anything and everything they are doing including the actions of their employees and team members. The people that work in these settings should be well educated and trained not only in the aspects of their job but also within any common setting as well. First impressions are important to start establishing someone’s character, however this doesn’t just involve their looks, but also how they speak and present themselves through their English. Use of non-standard English informal workplace setting can cause to a loss of reputation, cause negative interpretations, termination and limit future possibilities of the individual staff members as well as the workplace as a whole.
Using non-standard English in a formal workplace can lead to a loss of reputation of a person or a company. High functioning businesses and workplaces most likely have a reputation of satisfactory treatment. A misuse of grammar, diction, or orthography could be seen as a decline in the previously seen standards of the company. If expectations of clients and other individuals are not met, then those same individuals begin to change their opinions about the businesses and work place in question. Similarly, using text-speak in a formal workplace leads to the professional reputation becoming distorted in the views of the customers and the bosses.
Secondly, a new customer or individual who is involved with this workplace and is seeing the company’s … will make interpretations of the company as a whole based on the first impression a worker gives to this customer. Any aspect of the interaction acts as a first impression and will be remembered by the individual. First impressions can be made up of how someone sees an employee visually and how one speaks to the consumers. Having an individual apart of a formal workplace that lacks sophistication, grammar, diction, and orthography can give the wrong idea about an individual and the brand. These issues could imply that one’s workplace is not as formal as previously thought to be and won’t be able to produce a satisfactory product or experience.
Using non-standard English in a formal workplace setting can make one be perceived as uneducated and unfit for the job they applied for which will in turn can lead to termination of one in a workplace. A continues lack of standard English in a workplace can coax the idea that this individual is unprofessional and is no longer a benefit or convenience to the company. Using non-Standard English is perceived as unprofessional more likely when dealing with customers and clients. Which can in turn get one terminated because it is percieved as poor performance in the workplace. Many people get terminated at their workplace due to poor performance.
Lastly, If there is a continues lack of Standard English, the company or workplace could lose potential opportunities among the community or along a bigger scale. When being considered for a number of things such as grants, promotions, etc. individuals will look for sophistication and excellence among everyone associated with the workplace. The use of standard English practices focuses in on a group of people who you would want to be associated with your workplace. Using the wrong form of this standard English could result in an attraction of the wrong crowd.
To have a successful business and excel in the workplace everything needs to exceed the traditional standards. This use of Non-Standard English can be detrimental to the growth of a company because of their individual actions.
