You are required to undertake a small systematic review of a topic of interest in your discipline (using two or more appropriate journal databases**) then prepare a Literature Review Report using the headings set out in the Box 10.2 of Booth et. al. (2016, p. 282). Your report should be guided by a clear, answerable question in PICO/SPIDER format, demonstrate your mastery of the topic, assess the veracity, quantity and quality of literature (noting any identified ‘gaps’), and include sufficient detail that it may be replicated. It must be submitted to EASTS as a Word document.
Your Literature Review report must include the following sections:
Title: meaningful title which clearly identifies the topic
Abstract: (250 words, max) structured using the following headings:
Introduction: Briefly state what is already known about the topic, and provide a rationale for the review based on a clear statement about the nature, consequences and seriousness of the problem/issue. The Introduction should also include the question which guided the search and briefly outline the strategy used to locate evidence.
Methods: Provide an overview of databases consulted, search terms (key words) used, study types, and inclusion/exclusion criteria.
Results: Provide an overview of the results of the review, including a Flow Diagram, Summary of Included Studies table (included as an appendix) and additional tables/information as appropriate.
Discussion: Present a thematically organised discussion of the included studies, which critically appraises the strength of evidence, makes appropriate observations, identifies the limitations of the review, and explains any inconsistencies uncovered in the review process.
Conclusion: Address the contribution of the review and the implications for future research as related to points made in the Introduction.
References: APA 6th style.
Appendices: e.g. Summary of Included Studies, Search Strategy, and/or other items as appropriate. These should be referred to and discussed in the body of the report.
