Write a cause/effect essay that is between 1,000 and 1,200 words long on one of the following topics (the word count is comprised of only the words within the essay’s paragraphs). Your essay, which counts 20% of your entire course grade, must have the following:
A standard cause/effect structural pattern as discussed in class, wherebyonly one cause/effectis given for each body paragraph
An engaging introduction paragraph with a strong thesis statement
Body paragraphs that support your thesis with plenty of details and examples
A strong conclusion paragraph
Your essay must follow MLA formatting—that is, written in Times New Roman, 12-point font, double-spaced and with one-inch margins, as well as with the appropriate last name and page numbers. Also, the total length of all quotations (both direct and indirect) should be no more than 10% of your entire paper, and appropriately-placed parenthetical citation(s) and a fully-sourced works cited page must accompany the essay. Finally, all of the sources that you quote should be credible, meaning you cannot use websites like Wikipedia, blogs, discussion board postings, etc.Remember to write your rough draft first and then find one—and only one—credible source to incorporate into your essay in order to enhance and/or support your paper. Do not conduct research prior to outlining and writing the rough draft because any ideas that you take from a source in the form of a direct or indirect quotation must be documented. Now, since the paper assignment requires only one source that makes up no more than 10% of your essay, you cannot incorporate very much of other people’s ideas into your paper, so use your source sparingly.
The rough draft of this essay is due during Week 3. In order to receive any credit for your draft, you must submit it into the Essay #1 Rough Draft Discussion Board in the Week 3 folder as a single Microsoft Word attachment with the file extensions .doc or .docxonly, and your draft must be at least 1,000 words long (only the paragraphs of the essay count). The final draft is due during Week 4, and it must be uploaded into the Essay #1 Dropbox as a single Microsoft Word attachment with the file extensions .doc or .docx only.
Failure to comply with any of these essay requirements will result in a substantial deduction of points. Failure to document allsources completely (i.e., plagiarism)—whether intentionally or unintentionally—will result in an automatic zero for the essay.
