These study tasks are linked to seminar activities conducted in weeks 2 to 5. You can complete the tasks without doing the activities, but participating in seminars is strongly recommended.
 
Provide a response of 200-250 words to each of the four study tasks below. It is expected that all of your answers will be RESEARCHED, and you must cite at least one source for each of your answers.
 
Task 1
Analyse the extent to which the social movement you have chosen to research does or does not fit the following criteria:

that it originates/operates outside of institutional power structure/systems
that it is characterised by collective or joint action
it features organised action and sustained action (not just one off events)
it is a challenger to/defender of, existing power/authority
it is made-up of “ordinary people” – members of civil society
it can be considered a key site for bringing about social, cultural and political change

 
Task 2
Provide an example of your chosen social movement, or a social movement organisation (SMO) within your chosen movement, freezing, personalising and polarising an issue. Consider these questions:

why has the movement/SMO frozen attention on this particular target?
why has the issue been polarised in the way it has?

Conversely, if the movement/SMO has not frozen, personalised or polarised the issue, consider why not?
 

 
Task 3
Provide an example of your social movement/SMO using one of the five types of resources (moral, cultural, social-organisational, human and material). Consider these questions:

To what extent and in what way is your example fungible and/or proprietary?
How was/is the example resource acquired (aggregation, self-production, co-option/appropriation or patronage)? Why?

 
Task 4
Provide an example of your social movement/SMO using diagnostic, prognostic and motivational framing of an issue. Consider:

how these frames interact and complement each other
the function that each frame fulfills in mobilising support for the movement/SMO
