First, view the documentary film “Documented” by Jose Antonio Vargas. It is approximately 90 minutes long and available for viewing on demand through Canvas (the link is in the “Immigration Essay” assignment file). Now imagine you are going to work on a time traveling television series in which the narrator of the film you watched, Jose Antonio Vargas, travels back to a different era of American history each week to see what his life as a Filipino immigrant would have been like in that era — and also what it would be like compared to other immigrants of the time. You will write a four- to five-page paper that sketches out ideas for at least three episodes of this series. In each episode Vargas will be exploring immigrant life in a different time period. At the conclusion of your paper he will be back in today’s world, considering what has changed and not changed through the years. You can take reasonable creative liberties with this. You might want to put him in a specific place and time and imagine what kind of people he may have met or what kind of things he may have read or experienced. They key, of course, is that you will be able to show how the scenario you set up reflects the actual American history with immigration. Grading criteria In addition to how well you fulfill the basic mandate of the assignment, grades will be based on how well you synthesize the following elements from the course: • Use of evidence from the documentary film to illustrate points about his contemporary experience. Please describe specific scenes or moments from the film that make your point, citing them with the filmmaker’s name in parenthesis: (Vargas) – no other information is required in the citation. • Reference to the perspectives of different authors to illustrate points about different time periods past and present. These authors might include Guarneri, Fleegler, Anbinder, Buchanan, Legrain, as well as any authors from earlier in the course if they seem relevant. Cite references to these sources with the author’s name and page number in parenthesis: (Guarneri 4). • Incorporation of concepts we have discussed to add context to all of the above.
