Rationale
Family is also a folk taxonomy; a culturally constructed category. The
purpose of this project is to gain an understanding of how different
societies reckon family or kin groups. A kinship is a network of
relatives within which individuals possess certain mutual rights and
obligations. These might include your name, residence, rank, property,
ethnicity, nationality, religion, etc. It will be very helpful to study
the kinship diagrams in your textbook closely before creating your own
kinship diagram.

This video demonstrates a Patrilineal Kinship Group example from one of the Anthropology faculty:
Using yourself as Ego, create a kinship diagram that includes at least
three generations. If this is not possible, select a fictional family
(e.g. Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, etc.) and create a kinship diagram
that includes at least three generations.
Make 4 copies of your kinship diagram.
On one complete kinship diagram, mark all members of your patrilineal
descent group. Make a list of individuals from the complete kinship
diagram who would not be apart of your family (patrilineal descent
group).
On one complete kinship diagram, mark all members of your matrilineal
descent group. Make a list of individuals from the complete kinship
diagram who would not be apart of your family (matrilineal descent
group).
On one complete kinship diagram, label all cousins as cross-cousins or parallel cousins (review page 218 in your textbook).
On one complete kinship diagram, mark your consanguineal kin and affinal kin (review page 208 in your textbook).
Be sure to label each kinship diagram to indicate what is being labeled
(Patrilineal Descent Group, Matrilineal Descent Group, etc.). A
patrilineal kinship includes all descendants of a male member of the
patrilineage and a matrilineal kinship includes all descendents of
female members of a matrilineage. Note that patrilineal kinships include
both males and female just like matrilineal kinships include both males
and females and that your patrilineal kin is not the same as all
relatives on your father’s side of your family and your matrilineal kin
is not the same as all relatives on your mother’s side of your family.
When creating your kinship diagram, bear in mind that it will need to be
submitted online.
Each kinship diagram will be worth 5 points. Your work will be evaluated on the accuracy of each diagram.
