Large software projects include systems analysts, programmers, architects, database specialists, project managers, documentation specialists, trainers, and testers among others. The term software development methodology refers to a standard, proven work process that enables systems analysts, programmers, project managers, and others to make controlled and orderly progress in developing high-quality software.
It is important to note that a methodology also offers guidelines for managing the quality of software during the various stages of development. See Figure 7-1.
Studies have shown that the cost to identify and remove a defect in an early stage of software development (requirements definition) can be up to 100 times less than removing a defect in a piece of software that has been distributed to customers. Use Figure 7-2 to aid the discussion.
