Cloud Computing is a rising innovative that provides flexible, scalable and reliable framework for companies whose data and services are hosted on the internet. These services are maintained in distributed network and hence exposed to vulnerable attacks by the intruders. The most well-known Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks is the biggest threat to the cloud environment.
The DDoS attack occurs when huge number of packets are sent from different hosts to the servers.
The primary reasons why cloud environment is more prone to DDoS attacks is because it is shared by multiple users which makes these attacks more destructive and the network resources being temporarily unavailable to its users.
Let’s consider real-time scenarios, where the cost of network latency has impact on Amazon business when there is 1% drop in sales for every 100 million seconds of latency. Google notices that when user spending 0.5 seconds extra for web searching there is a drop in 20% traffic. So, it is clear from the above, that for success of a business low latency should be achieved.
The practices for preventing DDoS attacks vary from traditional networks to that of cloud. Fundamental focus of DDoS attacks are resources like transmission capacity, CPU and so on and these are inadequate in system. This can be overcome if the resources are increased but that might result in waste of resources and monetary loss. Most of the DDoS attacks aim to impede customer experience. So, without the security it is uncommon for DDoS attacks to go unnoticed in the cloud environment.
In our paper, we are going to discuss the variety of DDoS attacks and threats they pose on cloud environment. And most vulnerable paths that DDoS attacker may choose to attack Cloud environment.
