REPORT TASK For the main written assignment in this course you will write a report about an innovation from your discipline that has emerged in your lifetime. Identify a new development that has occurred within the context of your discipline and that has had a significant impact on the world. For example, it might be an innovative piece of technology, a scientific breakthrough, a leap in engineering or architectural design, or an improved method for taking care of the environment. The report should not exceed 1000 (+/- 10%) words and should follow the format below. The word count does not include the Table of Contents, the Abstract or the Reference List The report is to use the sub-headings below; it is customary to number these in reports. The sections on the positive and negative aspects are the most important of the report and this should be reflected in their length relative to the other sections. While a few dot points may be appropriate, most of the writing should be in paragraph form. The report is to be typed (1.5 line spacing) and in 12 point Arial font. You should cite a minimum of three (3) quality academic sources for your report. Please use the APA referencing style in your response. Reports lacking in-text referencing and/or a reference list will be considered incomplete. N.B. For the draft submitted in Week 6, it is not necessary to write an abstract or to include a table of contents. Do not submit a cover sheet. Title Place a title on its own page. The title should not exceed 10 words and should reflect the content of the report. Table of Contents (not required for the first draft) Place a table of contents on its own page. The table of contents lists the report’s sub-headings and indicates the page on which each subsection commences. Abstract (not required for the first draft) Place the Abstract on its own page, with the sub-heading “Abstract”. It should not exceed 120 words. It should summarise the most important aspects of the report. Introduction The Introduction begins on a new page, with a sub-heading (N.B. subsequent sub-sections do not begin on new pages). Explain important background information about the innovation, such as the people and/or institution(s) and/or companies responsible, and the historical and/or national context in which it emerged. Briefly explain the significance of the innovation. Why is it a noteworthy innovation in relation to your discipline and/or society in general? Finish with a purpose statement. Choose ONE of the sub-headings above. Alternatively, you may create a similar one that suits your topic but you must have approval from your tutor when you create the outline. Explain the operational nature of the innovation. The following questions can be used to stimulate ideas, but you do not have to address all of them: How does the innovation work? What is its function? What does it do? How does it operate? What process(es) and/or procedure(s) are involved? How is it used? Explain any highly discipline-specific vocabulary for the non-specialist reader. Positive Aspects/Advantages/Benefits Choose ONE of the sub-headings above. Alternatively, you may create a similar one that suits your topic but you must have approval from your tutor when you create your outline. Explain the positive aspects of this innovation. The following questions can be used to stimulate ideas, but you do not have to address all of them: What advantages does this innovation have compared to what existed before? What positive outcomes have resulted from it? What have been the benefits of the innovation for society and/or your discipline? Negative Aspects/Disadvantages/Implementation Challenges/Problems/Drawbacks Choose ONE of the sub-headings above. Alternatively, you may create a similar one that suits your topic but you must have approval from your tutor when you create your outline. Explain any downsides to the innovation. The following questions can be used to stimulate ideas, but you do not have to address all of them: Are there any drawbacks or negative side effects for society (or sections of society) as a result of the innovation? Do any groups of people object to the innovation? If so, why? Are there any ethical concerns about it? Has society changed in any negative way(s) as a result of the innovation? Were there any challenges or problems in the creation or implementation of the innovation? Conclusion Provide an overall evaluation of the impact of the innovation on society, weighing up both positive and negative views on it. You may make some recommendations for the future development of the innovation, and/or offer suggestions about where the innovation may lead in the future. References List all the secondary sources cited in your work. Use APA referencing style.
