Ethics at Work

There is evidence that gender inequalities in the workplace stem, at least in part, from the discrimination directed against women (Verniers, 2018). This is something that I found in the first company that I worked at, where there were only three females in the company. While there was nothing that was grossly obscene done or said, there were still comments made. I remember when one of the older females (who worked 15 years in the company) got put on a huge project. This project had very high visibility and she had a good chance of promotion if she did well on it. Once the VP announced that she was the lead and dismissed us there were several employees who made (what I feel was) inappropriate comments about why she got the job, i.e how she looked, that she must have “dazzled” them with her “woman-ways” while making hand gestures and they were giving it to her to demonstrate they support diversity. This even after she proved herself in the company for over a decade and worked her way up through the organization.
Being so young and new at the company I kept my mouth shut, but I still wonder if she knew what they were saying about her. Throughout my time there, myself and the other female (who was ten years my senior) would bring it up to the other employees attention when we heard them make a comment about us that we felt was unprofessional. Most did stop making such comments however there were still the few who didn’t understand why we were trying to change “their culture”. Since then, the company has grown an I know they have hired a HRM, who I assume is working to change the culture in the organization to a more professional atmosphere. Also, two of the main employees who were making the comments have retired, which has helped to dramatically shift the culture.
