Paper details:
For this assignment, you will be assigned a letter of the alphabet. You will write a brief (4-5 pages, double-spaced) analysis of your letter’s history and usage.

While you could write much more than 4-5 pages, and are free to include any interesting information you come across, your essay should include at least the following elements:

Provide background on the invention of the letter (when, what, where, who, etc.).Trace the origin of the letter’s visual aspects (such as its original forms, shapes, variations through time and other alphabets, etc.).Provide examples of how this letter is used outside of phonetic writing, such as a semasiogram (i.e., musical notation, mathematics, computer code, etc.) and why this particular letter was chosen for this purpose (if known).Provide examples of this letter in cultural artifacts and its importance (i.e., the A in Hawthorne’s The Scarlett Letter, including an explanation of the A’s use as such a symbol).

Important Notes

·Wikipedia is a useful place to start your research, but don’t begin and end your research at Wikipedia and certainly do not copy the information in the article. Go to the primary sources at the bottom of the page when possible and dig up more information than a topical encyclopedia entry can provide. You should also plan to conduct library research on your letter. The librarians can help you find resources. In addition, I have placed David Sack’s Letter Perfect: The Marvelous History of Our Alphabet from A to Z on four-hour reserve in in the Wells Library.

·You may use images to illustrate your document, though images do not count toward the 4-5 page limit.

·Your final paper should be in Times New Roman, 12 pt font, with 1-inch margins.

·Any citation format is fine (MLA, APA, etc.) as long as it is consistent throughout the document.

Punctuation Preferences

·Lists should include a serial comma (red, white, and blue; not red, white and blue)

·For quotations, periods and commas should appear inside quotation marks, colons and semicolons outside, and question marks inside if the quotation is a question, and outside if the whole sentence–of which the quotation is a part–is a question.
