PROJECT DESCRIPTION This project is designed to allow you to further pursue the idea of typography – and other writing practices – as a technology that both affects and responds to a specific social, political, and economic context. You will produce a research paper with a thesis that answers your own research question about the relationship between writing technologies and their broader historical context. This paper should be approximately 1000 words, or three to four pages. It should engage with at least two peer-reviewed sources that are clearly relevant to your question as that is stated in your introduction. MORE CONCRETELY: The focus of this research paper is the idea of writing technologies. We have at this point discussed visual language as both a material and a symbolic technology. Here, I want you to select an example that is of special interest to you and discuss – How this writing practice was materially possible (so, what tools are involved and how are those tools specific to the environment they were used in) – How this particular writing technology responded to and changed social organization Your conclusion should present a thesis that explicitly describes a relationship between the material writing practice and its historical context. (the gestural possibilities of brush and ink for letter forming during the Han dynasty contributed to the cultural significance of calligraphy as a manifestation of an individual’s education and moral character”). Please view the provided video tutorials, “Writing a Critique of a Designed Object” and “Using the OCADU Research Library” before beginning your work on this project.
