From Laozi Introductory material pp. 722–723 and pp. 723–731 Du Fu Introductory material pp. 1195–1199 (I do not have the reading the texts) *Respond to the following prompt Poetry can be defined as language under pressure. A poet seeks to create meaning using images and metaphor to say things in terms of another. The creator of a poem often has less space to make his or her point than a novelist or playwright. Pick a poem or pair of poems and write an analytical essay that describes your relationship to the poem(s). I’m especially interested in hearing your interpretation of themes and images that occur in the poetry. What connections can you make to other texts that we have studied this semester? How does the poetry affect you in your daily life? Your essay should be personal. (I am not interested in what you found on a website. Plagiarism rules will be strictly enforced, meaning you must cite any idea that is not 100 percent your own.) Create a well-developed essay that uses textual evidence to support your claims. *paper should be 300–500 words *Back up your arguments with evidence from the readings. *Be sure to use quote, summary, or paraphrase at least once. *Respond to the discussion prompt and demonstrate higher order thinking (apply, analyze, synthesize, evaluate, examine, pose, or connect to course concepts) *Follow MLA formatting and documentation guidelines when referring to course readings and other materials. *Any Internet sources you quote, paraphrase, or summarize must be cited Use proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
