The prompt for this paper is as follows: The belief that Alexander was a god or demi-god led to the rise of the CULT of the RULER in the great Hellenistic world. How was it possible that the Greeks would be willing to believe that Alexander was a god or semi-divine being ? And why would subsequent Greek rulers be willing to portray THEMSELVES as gods to their subject peoples such as the Egyptians and the Persians, especially given the traditional Greek fear of hubris ? Therefore, examine how this conception that Alexander is a god first developed in the Greek world. You can also follow the development of the Cult of the Ruler in Ptolemaic Egypt. And you can also use this analysis to comment on the relationship between heroes and history and legends and myths.
