At the end of Unit 4, you will submit a 1600-1800 word (about 6-8 pages, plus the works cited page) Research-Based Synthesis Essay that incorporates a minimum of six sources. A minimum of three of these sources must be from the Library database system, and a minimum of one must be from a peer-reviewed academic journal publication. In this essay, you must present a problem facing our South Florida community, explain why this is an important issue that needs to be addressed, and then present a solution that could be used to address this problem or part of it. (You should try to focus on one solution and be thorough in presenting it, as opposed to focusing on several solutions). Your essay should bring the sources you choose into conversation with each other in order to present and showcase multiple perspectives on the topic/issue. Additionally, the essay must also present and develop your position on the issue (your thesis statement) within the context of this larger, ongoing debate concerning the solutions to this problem. For this paper, your thesis will focus on why the problem you have selected is an important issue that needs to be addressed, and it should also articulate your solution to the problem. Finally, your essay must be presented in proper MLA format, including proper use of paraphrases and quotations, in-text citations, and a works cited page. (Note: The works cited page is not included in the total word count for the essay.) Lastly, this paper must not use first-person (“I,” “me,” “my”) or second-person (“you,” “your,” “yours”) pronouns.
