Assignment Brief and Scenario Activity 1 Imagine that there is going to be an exhibition at Docklands Academy, London at the end of this term on “The Travel and Tourism Industry – History and Trends”. Imagine that many people are going to be invited to this event, including people who are already working in the travel and tourism industry, as well as others who are considering a career in this sector. You have been asked to provide images and written text that can be displayed on a stand at the exhibition. In addition, you have been asked to prepare some slides with a presentation, which you can give at a specific time during the day of the exhibition. For your exhibition display stand, you are asked to provide pictures, graphs, diagrams and/ or text on the theme of “the history and development of the travel and tourism industry”. In particular, to carry out this task successfully, you should aim to; – • critically evaluate the inter-relationship between the different elements of the travel and tourism industry and demonstrate how a weakness in any one element can impact on the overall tourist experience. To achieve this, the information you include should provide; – • an analysis of the discrete role of each key element of the travel and tourism industry and evaluate how the different elements interact to provide a tourism experience. For this in turn to be provided adequately at least, your display stand would need to include; – • key milestones in the development of the travel and tourism industry with an analysis of the different sectors that make up the tourism experience; and • an identification of the key elements of the travel and tourism industry and how they relate to create the tourist experience Activity 2 You are also required to prepare a presentation with slides on “current trends in travel and tourism”. Your presentation should ideally aim to provide; – • a critical evaluation of links between the key drivers of tourism behaviour and the popularity of different tourism destinations and experiences. To achieve the above at a satisfactory level, you would need to; – • identify a number of different factors affecting tourism behaviour; • give insight into models of motivation and their impact on how consumers make decisions; • identify recent and emerging patterns and trends in the international travel and tourism industry; and • examine the factors affecting the popularity of a range of global destinations. For your presentation on this theme to be considered good, you would need to include; – • an assessment of the factors that underpin tourist behaviour and evaluate their impact on decision-making processes; • an analysis of recent patterns in international travel and tourism and highlight their significance to the development of the global travel and tourism industry; and • an analysis of the factors affecting the popularity of different destinations and assessment of their relative level of importance to a destination’s popularity. Providing separate slides for each of these points would be a good way to carry out this task; but other approaches, for example taking points together, are possible.
