ASSESSMENT 1 CASE STUDY
You are a departmental manager of [X] unit in a [X] hospital. The hospital is interested in using a new patient survey (Australian Hospital Patient Experience Question Set or AHPEQS) to evaluate and improve services from the patients’ perspective. Your unit has volunteered to take part in this initiative, along with 4 other units in the hospital.
The initiative is being trialed for 12 months, and participating units are required to administer the survey to all adult admitted patients as part of their discharge process (or within 1 month of discharge by email).
Participating units are also required to: i) meet monthly to discuss survey results, ii) to identify areas where patients’ experiences of care need improvement, and iii) to develop, and implement, action plans for addressing those areas. These meetings are required to be multidisciplinary, with representation from medical, nursing, management, and allied health services at a minimum. Where possible, the units are encouraged to invite patients to participate in the process – the method is up to you.
To support this initiative, the hospital is funding an administrative position for one day a fortnight to support each unit in administering the surveys and collating results. To encourage interdepartmental collaboration and learning, a one-day learning workshop will be held with all five participating units, near the end of the 12 months, to share their data and experiences in developing and implementing the action plans.
