The place of young people in society has been seen as problematic for a number of decades: where they gather, how they spend their time, and how they speak has been considered as either a challenge or an opportunity to market a product. The advent of the “Teenager” and the growth of youth culture – music, art, dress, food has had a significant impact on both the economy and the social values and practices of advanced societies such as Australia, the US and Europe. In this context, the public perception of how youth behave and their role in society is contested. Young people are highly “mediatized”. This means that they are represented in the media in particular ways and they use media and digital technologies in new and often innovative ways. Often young people are portrayed as either in danger or as posing a threat. This media representation has an impact on how these young people are able to function in society.
Your task is to
analyse a chosen digital media representation (social media, the Internet, video and film, Music, Art, memes & other forms of media) of adolescents in society (or, any other digital item as negotiated).
critically discuss and report on what this tells us about how these young people are depicted in the specific example and how this depiction may influence their lives. Or, you can report on how young people relate to, or use the digital item you have selected.

The social context (as many of the following or just one or two): How is the artefact constructed, is it: sexist, racist, does it emphasize social class (bogan vs. affluent elite) differences, or geography (city vs. country; outer suburban vs. inner-city)?
Is the image or representation part of a marketing strategy? What messages are contained within artefact? Is it being used to promote, educate or warn?
How accurate a portrayal of young people do you think that this artefact is? Is it promoting positive or negative messages? Are young people stereotyped by and through this artefact?
