Evaluate a Paragraph
Your Task: First, read Gisele Galoustian’s “Robotic Cats are ‘Purr-fect’ Companions for Isolated Seniors” (2020) and Paula Span’s “Robo-Pets for Comfort in Isolating Times” (2020). Then, read the two sample paragraphs below, which attempt to answer the following question: “How can robotic pets contribute to the wellbeing of older adults?”
After you have read both paragraphs, use your knowledge of paragraph structure to answer the questions that appear on page 2. Use “Save As” to give the file a new name after you begin to ensure that you do not accidentally submit the blank template for grading.

Paragraph A
Paragraph B

The companionship of a pet can be so important, especially for the elderly. Interactive automated animals, or robotic pets, were invented for people who might find caring for a real pet too much of a challenge. Loneliness and lack of connection can pose a problem for older adults at the best of times, and COVID-19 has only made the situation worse for those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Robotic pets can be a simple way to combat the poor mental and physical health issues caused by social isolation. Current research suggests that spending time with a robotic pet results in a number of potential benefits (Galoustian, 2020; Span, 2020). Robotic pets are not a one-size-fits-all solution for social isolation. What they offer is a form of interaction that might be otherwise unavailable to those who are living alone, as well as all those who are following the physical distancing measures mandated by COVID-19. This is what makes them the ideal companion!
Interactive automated animals, also known as robotic pets, are an innovative solution to the social isolation experienced by many older adults. Loneliness and lack of connection can pose a problem for older adults at the best of times, and COVID-19 has only made the situation worse, especially for those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Robotic pets can be a simple way to combat the poor mental and physical health issues caused by social isolation. Current research suggests, for example, that spending time with a robotic pet results in a number of potential benefits, including reduced anxiety, depression, and stress; improved mood and cognitive function; less need for pain medication; and increased tactile and verbal communication (Galoustian, 2020; Span, 2020). While robotic pets are not a one-size-fits-all solution for social isolation, they do offer a form of interaction that might be otherwise unavailable to those who are living alone, as well as all those who are following the physical distancing measures mandated by COVID-19.
